01. Getting Started
-------------------
All of the programs on this CD have been carefully reviewed and
rated. Any Program with the notation "Try it!" means that it's
a program that does not expire or have usage restrictions.
You should use these programs first. Later, you can go back and
explore similar programs to see what they have to offer.
Consult the help file included with each individual program for
notes and info regarding the program's operation.
02. Using the Applications Menu
-------------------------------
The WinGear Menu was designed to be very easy to use. You will notice
the Category list on the left side of the screen. Clicking on a category
will display the "contents" of that category in the File List. It
will also provide a brief description of the category in the
Description Box, located at the bottom of the menu. If you click on
a program in the File List, the description of that program will
now appear in the Description Box. You can read about the program and
decide if it is right for you. You can use the up/down arrows in both
the Category List and the File List to see more entries. Once you find
a program you want to try you can click on the Install button on the
right side of the screen and the program will run or installation
will begin. There are also text files located on this CD, in that case
you can click the View button to view the text document. (When you
click View while a program is selected, the WinGear menu attempts to
display a readme file for that program if it exists. If there is none,
nothing happens.) Clicking on the Help button, brings up this file,
and clicking on Exit exits the program.
03. Troubleshooting
-------------------
Q: I am having a problem installing a program!
A: Some programs do not have a specific "Setup" program associated
with them. In that case, a "Self Extractor" was attached to the
program. When you click "Install" from the menu, a window will
pop up and ask where you want to extract to. You enter the path
name as usual. Now it is up to you to make a short-cut to the
program. Usually, there is also a readme file that comes with the
program.... you should find it in the folder you extracted to.
Typically the program is extracted to the "Program Files" folder
located on your C: Drive.
Another installation problem (although rare) could be the fact
that the menu is interfering with the setup program. Some Setup
programs are finicky and like to be the only application running.
It is a good idea to close all other applications you have
running (except for the Setup program) before continuing.
Q: The menu Install Button does not work!
A: A rare problem on some Win98 machines causes the Install button
in the menu to not function properly. In this case, the solution
is to install it by hand. You can still use the menu to browse the
CD, then when you find a program you want to install, do the
following. 1. open the Windows Explorer. 2. Change to the CD drive
that has our CD, 3. Change to the "programs" folder. In here you
will see all the programs listed. You can now find the program
you want to install, and run setup.exe or install.exe in the
programs folder by double-clicking on it.
Q: I clicked Install and nothing happened!
A: You probably have a text file selected. Install only works for
Programs. Use the View button to view text files.
Q: I clicked View and nothing happened!
A: View only works when (1) the file is a text file, like a faq or a
technical document, or (2) the program you have selected came with
a readme.txt file. If no readme file exists, nothing happens when
you click View.
